Daytona, FL: 50th Rolex 24 Hour Race: Hey Race Fans, 2012 marks a special time for the 24 Hour Race; Daytona's International Speedway and Grand-Am Road Racing will be celebrating its 50th anniversary of the race! The race had its debut back in 1962 and was originally called the Daytona Continental. The first race lasted a mere 3 hours and ended in a controversy which led to the international rule "requiring a car to cross the line under its own power in order to be classified." Four years later in 1966, the officials decided to extend the race to 24 hours in an effort to have an American race that rivaled the world famous Le Mans. Also new that year was the multiple driver system, which was put in place because it’s not the durability of the driver that is being tested but rather that of the car. Don't let the length of the race fool you into thinking this race was meant to be a Le Mans copy cat, these races have two very different courses. Unlike the Le Mans being raced on city streets, the Rolex 24 Hour Race is held on a combination between the oval track and street course at the Daytona International Speedway.
